The opening session of the US House of Representatives revealed major divisions among Republicans.
Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy, who is the favorite in the race to choose the Speaker of the House of Representatives, failed to win the office despite conducting three rounds of ballots.
McCarthy, who led Republicans in the House of Representatives for four years, was expected to be chosen to lead the House, succeeding Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
The Republican Party won a simple majority in the recent US midterm elections.
And a number of Republicans refuse to support him, so he didn’t get the number of votes needed to win office.
McCarthy insists he will stay in the race until he wins the job.
This is the first time since 1923 that the House of Representatives has failed to choose a speaker during the first voting process.
