Weather and climate, danger warning | Extreme weather hits Europe: – The most extreme event in European history

2023 opened with a record run of weather records in several European countries.

Poland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia all recorded the hottest January days of all time, according to climatologist Maximiliano Herrera, who monitored extreme temperatures over a longer period of time.

Was The Guardian who first mentioned the matter.

– Unique in modern times

In the Polish city of Korbielów 19 degrees were measured, the usual temperature is 1 degree. In Javorník in the Czech Republic it was 19.6 degrees, while the average temperature is usually 3 degrees. 16.4 degrees Celsius was measured in Belarus, while our neighboring country Denmark experienced a record heat of 12.6 degrees. The Netherlands had a temperature of 16.9 degrees in 2023.

– We can consider it the most extreme event in European history, Herrera tells The Guardian.

He compares it to the dramatic UK heatwave in July 2022.

– Spread this scope to a much larger area, which includes about 15 countries, he says.

Scottish meteorologist Scott Duncan also mentioned the heat records on Twitter:

– This is very unique in modern times, he writes.

According to the paper, the extreme heat is coming from a warm airmass blowing off the west coast of Africa. The air mass moved through Portugal and Spain and further up into Europe.

Norwegian danger warnings

In Norway the situation is completely different. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued an orange alert for large parts of eastern Norway.

– Over the course of tomorrow it could fall about 25 centimeters and in the next few days it could increase up to 60-70 in the Oslo area, meteorologist Unni Nilsen told Nettavisen on Wednesday.

Furthermore, the year started with extreme cold in some parts of the country. Leirflaten in Innlandet County was 33.7 degrees cooler on Tuesday night, while Hemsedal was 28.2 degrees cooler.
