BRI and Mandiri do not need to have branches abroad…

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Minister of State Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir banned two state-owned banks (Himbara), PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (BBRI) and PT Bank Mandiri (BMRI) from opening branches abroad.

“I have already spoken, BRI and Mandiri you don’t need to have overseas branches,” Erick told the BUMN Ministry on Monday (2/1/2023).

The former Inter president said that even if it were necessary to open a branch, the chosen country would be Singapore.

“If needed, only 1 (branch) in Singapore,” Erick continued.

Erick suggested that it was okay to open a branch of Himbara, but with the aim of helping the diaspora and migrant workers.

“Don’t be too imaginative to open branches overseas, but help the diaspora there, the migrant workers,” he continued.

Erick said opening branches overseas should be used to seek funding (financing) cheap. Because, in some countries, saving does not generate interest.

“It’s not nice, for example, if our diaspora can save in BNI, even if they can’t be interested in (foreign) countries. It’s nice if our diaspora can save in BNI. This means we can get cost cheap funding that we can give to MSMEs,” he said.
