Director Shin Won-ho, who made the “Reply” series a hit, has revealed his thoughts on producing a follow-up series.
On December 30 last year, actor Lee Si-eon’s YouTube channel, “Shion’s Cool”, released “Reply Class Reunion Episode 2!” The video was uploaded with the title of director Shin Won-ho’s unfiltered behind-the-scenes story. Lee Si-eon, Seo In-guk, Lee Ho-won and Eun Ji-won, who appeared in “Reply 1997”, and Shin Won-ho, who directed the video, appeared in this video.
In the “Reply” series, starting with “Reply 1997”, “Reply 1994” and “Reply 1988”, all series have achieved great success. At the time, he perfectly reproduced those days to evoke sympathy and nostalgia, and was much loved by viewers for his warm storytelling that captured emotions and both comedic and emotional developments that piqued curiosity about who the female lead’s future husband would be.
In this video, director Shin Won-ho told various stories from the beginning of the “Reply” series. Eun Ji-won asked director Shin Won-ho, “Do you have any ideas about the Reply series?” In response, director Shin gave an honest answer, saying, “It’s a story I really want to tell, but there are parts that aren’t easy in reality.”
Director Shin said, “It’s very difficult to shoot. I still suffer from PTSD. Even while filming modern dramas like ‘The Smart Life of a Prisoner’ or ‘The Life of a Smart Doctor’, I am surprised when I see an air conditioner above. Also, when shooting outdoors, if you see the new address, you have to cover it, so there are still occupational diseases that are surprising. The shooting process is difficult,” he confessed.
Lee Si-eon expressed his wish: “Personally, I hope ‘Reply 2002’ comes out.” In response, Shin said, “2002 was the most difficult year. It is very difficult to get rid of the copyright on the World Cup. Right now, the Seoul Olympics appear in the first episode of ‘Reply 1988’. I released the copyright. It’s not open-ended, the contract was about a year and a half or two years long, but I paid the money and didn’t renew the contract. All the scenes currently airing are blurry and dull.”
At the same time, director Shin said, “The ‘Reply’ series has many things such as the power of props, the power of cultural products, songs, films and dramas. He explained.
Director Shin also chose ‘Reply 1997’, which was his first film, when asked, “Which job do you feel the most affection for?” He said, “I see so many inexperienced parts in my directing and editing, so I puckered, but I was very excited when I answered. However, it was a scene where I did it while laughing,” he said. ‘ was the most fun, feeling like first love.”
