Background of extremism in a machete attack in New York

According to authorities, the man who attacked three police officers with a machete near Times Square in New York on New Year’s Eve is being investigated on suspicion of Islamic extremism.

The 19-year-old likely traveled to New York from the US state of Maine for such an act, an unnamed investigator told The New York Times today. The man is being investigated on two counts of attempted murder and two counts of attempted assault.

During the New Year’s Eve attack, one of the three police officers shot the alleged perpetrator in the shoulder. One of them and the 19-year-old are still in hospital but in stable condition, the newspaper reported. The suspect converted to Islam a few months ago and accused his mother of distrust in a possible farewell letter.
