A vessel carrying 65 people suffered an engine failure in the waters off Pulau Rambut, Thousand Islands. As a result, the vessel was adrift in the sea.
“About 2 hours (the vessel) drifted in the northern waters of Untung Jawa Island, Thousand Islands,” Jakarta SAR Office Chief as SAR Mission Coordinator (SMC), Fazzli, said in his statement. , Monday (2/1 /2023).
The incident happened on Sunday (1/1) at 12:00 WIB. The vessel named KM Giant sailed on the Panggang Island-Pramuka Island-Kali Adem Pier route.
From passenger manifest data for KM Titanic, the 65 people included 27 female, 9 children and 31 adult male passengers. Apparently, aside from the engine running out, the ship’s rudder was broken.
“The rudder was broken so the vessel could not be steered/controlled,” he added.
Obtaining information that the vessel was adrift, SAR officers rushed to the scene to evacuate the passengers.
“We have deployed a rescue team from Pantai Mutiara wharf using RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) 03 Jakarta to the scene to evacuate the ship’s passengers,” Fazzli said.
All passengers could be evacuated. They were transferred to KM Rindu Alam on Untung Jawa island.
