An Israeli bombing of Damascus airport puts it out of action and kills two soldiers

Two soldiers were killed at dawn on Monday following an Israeli shelling that targeted Damascus International Airport and put it out of action, according to Syria’s official news agency, ‘SANA’, citing a military source.

The source said that at around 2:00 this morning (23:00 GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out an airstrike with missile barrages, hitting the international airport in and around Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of two soldiers, the wounding of two others, some material losses and the exit from the Damascus International Service airport.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Israeli shelling targeted sites of Lebanese Hezbollah and pro-Iranian groups in and around the airport, including an arms depot.

This is the second time Damascus airport has been out of service since June 2022, when an Israeli bombing led to the suspension of all flights for around two weeks after damaging one of the runways.

No official comment from Israel, which has launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria in recent years, targeting Syrian army sites and Iranian and Hezbollah targets.

Tehran confirms the presence of elements of its armed forces in Syria on advisory missions. Since 2013, Lebanese Hezbollah, backed by Tehran, has been fighting openly in Syria in support of regime forces.

Israel rarely confirms that it has carried out attacks in Syria, but reiterates that it will continue to face what it describes as Iran’s attempts to consolidate its military presence in Syria.

The Israeli military justifies the attacks as necessary to prevent archenemy Iran from gaining a foothold on Israel’s borders.

Since 2011, Syria has witnessed a bloody conflict, which has killed about half a million people, caused extensive damage to infrastructure and led to the displacement of millions of people inside and outside the country.
