On Sunday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen admitted to her New Year’s speech that Denmark has been too naïve about its own security. She then urged the Danes to give more.
– Denmark continues its enduring and loyal support to Ukraine. At the same time, we have to prepare ourselves for the fact that we are also facing a high level of threat here at home. In Europe we tend to imagine that the rest of the world thinks and acts like us. For many years we believed that trade and growth would almost automatically lead to peaceful coexistence.
– We downshifted when the others got ready. And in a number of areas we have become too dependent on others. Now we see that we have been too naive. That we are on the threshold of a new era – which will be challenging, said Frederiksen and promised that in 2030 they will fulfill their promise to NATO to spend two percent of its GDP on defence.

Frederiksen also said that the Danes have a hard time understanding Russia’s atrocities.
– Hand on heart: We cannot overcome the war in Europe, the climate crisis and the challenges here at home if we are not, each and every one, ready to give more.
Retired Colonel Lars R. Møller is critical.
– Considering that in 2014 a Prime Minister of the Social Democrats promised that we would increase our contributions, I cannot be impressed. It’s been eight years and nothing has happened, Møller tells Danes BT.
