Within the panorama of Italian numismatics, among the most sought-after coins ever we have one that has characterized the history of our country: we are referring to the one with a value of 20 lire, certainly one of the most widespread and collected by representatives of this sector; its origins date back to 1861, at the State Mint of the city of Turin, but, specifically, we try to find out if it can actually have a noteworthy value.
At the time, a disproportionate amount of this particular object was minted and, for this reason, it should also be noted that there are various types of this piece with different aesthetic and physical characteristics. At this point, among the best known falling into this category, those produced during the reigns of Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I leap to our eyes, but, before proceeding too rashly on the question, it is appropriate to tell about the various existing pieces following a specific order given by the release period, to discover above all the value of each of them.
Here are the most expensive and famous 20 lire coins
The 20 gold lire of Vittorio Emanuele II, were produced in various mints of the Italian state, from 1861 (date of the formation of the Kingdom of Italy) to 1870. As already anticipated, the first coinage was in Turin, as regards the first 3427 specimens and, subsequently, its production was also expanded in the cities of Rome and Milan. In the front part we find the face of the sovereign represented, while in the opposite part there is the Savoy coat of arms with the words “Kingdom of Italy” around it“. For these reasons, the piece is characterized by an immense historical value and, in particular the one produced in gold, if it presented such a commendable aesthetic purity (in a state of uncirculated therefore), it would be worth at least between 700 and 1,000 €.
The 20 lire of Umberto I, also known under the name of “Marengo di Umberto Primo”, are another priceless object, obviously also made of gold. We certainly find the king depicted there, while, with reference to the production of the piece, this took place from 1879 to 1897; the current value of this coin would be highly interesting since, taking as an example one in the FDC state (uncirculated) it would have a value of 250 €. In addition, there are still more remarkable editions, the 1883 one with a price of 3,000 if in perfect condition.
