Police officers attacked with machetes near Times Square

A young man wounded three police officers with a machete on New Year’s Eve not far from Times Square in New York. Officers arrested the 19-year-old after he was shot in the shoulder, NYPD said at a news conference early in the new year. The injured police officers were taken to the hospital. Fortunately, they are all in stable condition, he said.

Police spoke of an “unreasonable attack” on a street near one of the largest New Year’s celebrations in the world: according to reports, the man approached an officer outside the cordoned-off area for the celebration in Manhattan and allegedly tried to hit him with the long blade on the head to beat. Then he assaulted two other policemen.

The FBI Federal Police have launched an investigation. “There’s no threat going on,” FBI agent Mike Driscoll said at the press conference. It is important to find out “what was the nature of the attack” by the alleged sole perpetrator.

For the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the New Year was welcomed on Saturday in front of the usual grand backdrop of Times Square. Tens of thousands of people celebrated the New Year with the traditional shower of confetti in the heart of the US metropolis.
