Since 1 September 2022, Crit’Air 5 vehicles and vehicles without a Crit’Air badge are prohibited from driving within a very specific perimeter of Greater Lyon, as part of the implementation of the Low Emission Zone (ZFE).

Crit’Air 2 – Petrol and hybrid vehicles between 2006 and 2010, diesel vehicles from 1 January 2011 for cars, between 2007 and 2016 for motorbikes and between 2007 and 2017 for mopeds
Crit’Air 3 – Petrol and hybrid vehicles between 1997 and 2005, diesel between 2006 and 2010, between mid 2004 and 2006 for motorcycles and mopeds
Crit’Air 4 – Diesel vehicles, between 2001 and 2005 for cars, between mid 2000 and 2004 for motorcycles and mopeds
Crit’Air 5 – Diesel vehicles, between 1997 and 2000
Unclassified – Before 1997 for cars and before 31 May 2000 for motorcycles and mopeds
68 euro fine for cars
If you have a car and don’t comply with the new rules, you risk a fine of 68 euros. Private cars and light commercial vehicles are affected by this class 3 fine. HGV risk, coaches and coaches 135 euros (class 4 good).
To avoid paying a fine, it’s best to purchase your own Crit’Air sticker. The application can be made entirely online. Just go to the site certificat-aria-gouv.fr, in the “Request your certificate” section. Don’t forget to bring your car registration document with you.
The price of the Crit’Air sticker is €3.67 including shipping costs for a shipment to France, indicate the site public-service.fr. However, be careful before you buy it! The Crit’Air sticker scam is a widespread phenomenon that is multiplying and claiming many victims.
Radar checks?
Bruno Bernard, president of the metropolis of Lyon, assures in this regard that checks will be required from the state services. It will then be the radars with automated reading of the license plates, positioned on board and within the perimeter of the ZFE, which will take the serial minutes.
The owners of the vehicles in violation will be notified by email of their verbalization, as is currently the case for excess speed. When will they see the light of day? The state lets the vague reign on their scheduled commissioning by mid-2024, or even 2025.
As a reminder, the ZFE currently applies to Lyon, part of Villeurbanne and the commune of Caluire-et-Cuire. It will soon be extended to other municipalities east of Lyon and to major axes such as the M6 and M7.
