ROberto Martinez has stepped down as Belgium coach following the fiasco in Qatar, a decision he announced to his players after the defeat to Morocco. The former Red Devils coach returned at length to the failed World Cup in Qatar in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws.

In this interview he talks about the difficulty of approaching the World Cup in winter: “I already knew we weren’t ready against Egypt. Nothing was right, mentally or physically. In 2018, I felt the team was ready as soon as we stepped on the plane. Here there were two days left before the match against Croatia. Many countries have used group matches as preparation. It was the same for, say, Germany or Denmark. It was simply the price to pay for a winter tournament. »

However, despite the failed World Cup and no trophies up for grabs, Roberto Martinez is happy with the work done: “I am proud of my dedication to this team. I’ve had enough opportunities over the years to walk away. Several clubs presented me with great projects. But I wanted to go all the way. I gave everything, I gave my life for this job. Qatar was a disappointment. »

And to conclude with a strong sentence: “When I analyze the past years, I can sleep peacefully. »
