Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office Indicted on the 29th for Violating the Military Service Law
Seok Hyeon-joon (31), a forward for the national soccer team who caused controversy after being placed on the Military Manpower Administration’s military dodger list, expressed his intention to fulfill his military duty, saying, “I wasn’t going to avoid military service.”
On the 30th, Seok Hyun-joon posted an article on his Instagram, explaining the situation regarding the military service issue and apologizing for the controversy.
He said, “I’m sorry that I let many people down because of the military service issue.
As of the 30th, after the investigation by the police and the prosecution, my military service issue went to court and I am awaiting trial.
In 2009, starting from the prestigious Ajax in the Netherlands, he continued his professional life abroad, was selected as a member of the national team and participated in 15 Serie A matches. Ola was at the center of controversy.
He was prosecuted for violating the military service law and lost an administrative case against the military personnel administration. Last year, French media reported that he was promoting naturalization and he received further criticism.
Seok Hyun-joon said, “There were a lot of rumors about military service evasion and naturalization, but nothing like that happened.
As a citizen of the Republic of Korea, I had no intention of avoiding military service,” he said.
He said: ‘Because I am obliged to defend the country, I have tried to send cooperation letters to terminate contracts with overseas clubs. ‘I also missed the moment when I could go to the CEO,’ he explained.
He continued: “Last summer, when I could afford the penalty with only one year of contract left, I paid the penalty for military service and terminated the contract.”
Seok Hyun-jun canceled his contract with Troyes at the end of July and currently has no squad.
He said: “A lot of misunderstandings and articles came out because I couldn’t do it when I should have completed my military service.
However, the reason I remained silent is that nothing had been clarified in the meantime,” he said.
“I apologize once again for not doing my military service at the right time and for causing unnecessary misunderstandings,” he said.
In this regard, the 1st Criminal Division of the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office (Chief Prosecutor Son Jin-wook) indicted Seok Hyun-joon without detention on the 29th on charges of not returning to Korea within the permit period of stay abroad by the military manpower administration (violation of the military service law) without justified reasons.
Prosecutors explained, “Considering that he voluntarily admitted to the charges after entering the country and expressed his intention to serve in the military, we decided to have him tried without detention.”
