The study, published shortly before the writer’s 160th birthday, was carried out over more than ten years, focusing both on Blaumanis’ literary works and on the analysis of the writing and art of his era. The monograph particularly emphasizes the multivoiced nature of Latvian culture of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the active contacts between artists of various fields and the excellent knowledge of the international context.

According to the publishers, one of the most striking features of Blaumanis’s prose and dramaturgy, which received such detailed attention for the first time, is also the close connection with the reader and theatrical spectator of his era, creatively using and innovative elements of both popular and elitist culture. The formation of the writer’s personality is examined, relating it to Latvian and Baltic German society and emphasizing how important the role played in Blaumanis’ work is by both the Latvian literary tradition and the current art of other European nations.

The well-known works of Blaumanis are revealed in the monograph in new and unexpected nuances and connections. The research center is Rūdolfs Blaumanis and his generation, who were the first creators of modern Latvian culture, creating a turning point in the development of our writing and art, write representatives of LU LFMI.
