Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger in Bavaria, has died at the age of 95. The Vatican reports that he passed away this morning at 09:34 at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in Vatican City.
German was pope from 2005 to 2013. His leadership was overshadowed by abuse scandals within the Roman Catholic Church. He has openly condemned child sexual abuse by clergy and has spoken out with victims in the United States, but has been accused of being too soft.
Recognition errors
In February of this year, Benedictus by letter that the Catholic Church made mistakes in addressing sexual abuse when he was Archbishop of Munich and Freising. Benedict presided over the diocese from 1977 to 1982, then as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. During that time, nearly 500 believers were abused, mostly boys.
Benedict lived the last years of his life in a converted monastery in the gardens of the Vatican. There he devoted himself to meditation and prayer.
The pope emeritus chose to keep his papal name and continued to wear white. Benedetto rarely appeared in public, but he also wrote and gave interviews.
