Marc-André ter Stegen has been one of FC Barcelona’s best players on the pitch for eight years. His word has long held weight in the club circle. Xavi Hernandez now acknowledges Ter Stegen’s development. The coach named the German one of the Blaugrana captains.
Ter Stegen is the new captain of the fourth team behind Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto. “The decision has been made,” Xavi confirmed ahead of the derby against Espanyol (Saturday, 2pm). A post had become vacant following the resignation of Gerard Pique.
“It’s a huge pride to be one of four captains,” the goalkeeper tweeted. Even before the decision was announced, Ter Stegen said: “Wearing the armband at Barça is something very special.”
