After Benedict’s health deteriorated, Pope Francis asked at the end of the last meeting this year for people to say a “special prayer for Pope Benedict.”
The retired Pope, whose real name was “Joseph Ratzinger,” had resigned from his post due to deteriorating health and had since lived in a monastery in the heart of the Vatican Gardens.
