Mayors of 30 cities kidnapped in Ukraine
Russian occupation forces in Ukraine have kidnapped 30 mayors since the beginning of the war, seven of whom are still missing, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said in an interview with the German magazine “Der Spiegel”.
“Mayors were targets everywhere. The Russians tried to arrest mayors and used various methods to force them to cooperate,” Klitschko explained.
He admitted that the Ukrainian government has not provided local officials with a clear answer to the question of whether or not they should leave their city in the event of a potential occupation. Klitschko added that the Ukrainians had to make such a decision themselves.
“The situation was difficult: if you stay with your community, you are a traitor (..) We turned to the government several times with a request to give instructions: stay or evacuate? But we did not get a clear answer,” Klitschko summed up .
Already at the beginning of the war, many cases were reported when the occupiers kidnapped the heads of Ukrainian cities and villages.
Oleksandr Starukh, head of the Zaporizhia region’s military administration, announced in March that the mayor of Dniprorudne city, Yevhen Matveyev, had been kidnapped.
In June, the occupiers kidnapped the mayor of Kherson, Ikhor Kolikhaev, who refused to cooperate with the occupation authorities. Oleksandrs Babich, the mayor of Hola Pristan, Oleksandrs Yakovlev, the mayor of Skadovsk, and Yury Palyuhs, the city council secretary, were also kidnapped.
On 11 March, in Melitopol, a group of 10 occupiers kidnapped the mayor of the city, Ivan Fedorova. On March 16, it became known that Fedorov was released from captivity by the occupiers. The mayor said the occupiers had accused him of funding the “Right Sector” movement.
