From the war in Ukraine to the World Cup and the nitrogen crisis: 2022 has once again offered plenty of inspiration for comedians. Claudia de Breij, Guido Weijers and Dolf Jansen are on stage with their New Year’s lecture. What do critics think of their performances? NU.nl lists the most important reviews.
Claudia de Breij – on NPO1 at 10.20pm
The Volkskrant is extremely enthusiastic about De Breij’s third New Year’s lecture. “Since the opening, in which he grasps the political year firmly and with many jokes, the 2022 edition is compelling and perfectly balanced, with seriousness, empathy, emotion, perspective and many comparisons that create air”.
Fidelity he describes De Breij’s performance as “connecting, sharp and cynical”. “The role of liaison minister, which is part of the New Year’s Conference tradition, suits Claudia de Breij like no other. De Breij wants to talk a little too much. Entertainment news in particular is with Glennis Grace, Lil Kleine , Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and Johan Derksen were overrepresented. It could have been a little less.”
This performance deserves your full attention. So it is recommended to look back the next day in peace.
From Theaterkrant it’s a little more critical. “It must be her age and worries about her children, both very understandable, but Claudia de Breij’s seriousness sometimes gets in the way of humour. The balance between learning and enjoyment is somewhat disturbed.”
The Telegraph he writes of a “strong and substantial presentation”. “Perhaps just a little less suitable for a cozy New Year’s Eve with friends, oil balls and champagne on TV. This performance deserves full attention. So it is recommended to look back in peace the next day.”
It A.D states that De Breij “reflects extensively on the surrounding scandals The voice in DDD“. “No light fare – but unavoidable in a review this year. Fortunately, De Breij also puts things into perspective, for example when he states: ‘The fact that all bastards are men does not mean that all men are bastards.'”
Guido Weijers – on RTL 4 at 8pm
In an interview with Fidelity he tells Weijers he wants to go back to basics. “This year it will be no-nonsense stand-up: a man, a microphone, and then making jokes that capture the spirit of the times. So no technical situations with a projection screen, a PowerPoint or a fancy background. I’ll leave all that fussing I’ve heard from theater directors that they really appreciate it and that there really is a different person on stage than there was fifteen years ago.
The Volkskrant he is critical of some parts of the performance. “Sometimes Weijers becomes a preacher and kicks some open doors. Other times the jokes are just too flat, like about celebrities who skated wrong in 2022 or fell from grace. But due to some recurring storylines, the 11th Guido Weijers’ New Year’s Eve is beautifully put together, with a cooling message from ‘Iceman’ Wim Hof, a salute to music great Henny Vrienten and a moral that is pro-nature and animal welfare”.
“Weijers’ New Year’s Eve show has a higher joke density than De Breij’s,” he writes The Telegraph. But not all jokes are equally strong, and Weijers sometimes puts his ‘preaching’ a little too much forefront. His account of the increasingly short walks he took with a terminally ill friend, on the other hand, seems to come from straight from his heart.”
Dolf Jansen – at performancegemist.tv
Jansen’s New Year’s Lecture was positively received by various reviewers. “The term ‘activist comedy,’ which he uses himself, covers the load,” he writes de Volkskrant. “In Lightning delivery Jansen is as well pronounced as ever, traditionally sometimes terribly bland too. “I don’t have a lower limit tonight,” he says as he talks about all kinds of Tinder variations.
“Away America’s confiscation of abortion rights, move on to Johan Derksen, to a speech about ‘fearful men’ and their transgressive behavior. In Utrecht he puts his hands together, especially as a earnest appeal to all men not afraid follows, who have nothing to fear from a changed time.”
“It’s easy to blame Dolf Jansen for always saying and preaching the same thing for his own parish,” he writes Fidelity. “This is what we do Lightning delivery however shortage. Jansen looks fresh and energetic. The pace of him remains incredibly high. It’s just a pity that he deems it necessary to scold the theater audience in the ‘province’. The people of Veghel and Emmen didn’t deserve it.”
Dolf Jansen gently jumps through the year, in which gifts are presented to the cabaret artist on a platter.
In the show, Jansen talks about his wife’s divorce, among other things. “It’s a showpiece,” he writes A.D. “But just as often Jansen forgets to pack a little right. He Explains how the position of women has changed and comes to a predictable conclusion through the candle incident of Johan Derksen: the development of the opposite sex scares some men.”
From Theaterkrant is slightly more positive about the comedian. “Jansen passes the year easily, in which gifts are presented to the comedian on a plate: Willem Engel, who after a few days in prison for sedition, compares himself to Nelson Mandela; Jumbo supermarket, which, like other supermarkets, has systematically cut farmers out and claims they have nothing to do with the farmers nitrogen problem; also retail company Blokker does flash deliveries and therefore assumes that someone really needs a colander within fifteen minutes.”
“As we are used to from Jansen, after his serious story laced with humor, he still has a hopeful thought. He believes that the right-thinking person should not let himself be led to the ruin of life on earth. much the contrary evidence still believes itself , is the question.”
