Leicester defender Wout Faes had a nightmarish day as Liverpool finished the year close to the top four of the English Premier League.
Faes became just the fourth player to score two own goals in a Premier League match, helping Liverpool come from behind to beat Leicester 2-1 on Friday in a game marred by defensive errors on both sides.
After a poor start to the season, Liverpool sit just two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham as they go into 2023. Jürgen Klopp’s side have won four in a row.
Meanwhile, West Ham are plunged into a slump after five successive defeats. David Moyes’ men conceded two goals in a 2-0 loss at home to Brentford, and the London side could appear bottom once the weekend’s games get underway.
Tributes were paid in both games to Brazilian star Pelé, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 82, and so will the rest of the day’s matches.
At Anfield, Liverpool had been behind for four minutes after a poor display in defense when he allowed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to cross into midfield unchallenged into Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
But on a night when Liverpool’s forwards were erratic, they got some much-needed help from Faes. The Belgian centre-back had a disastrous seven-minute stretch before the break.
