Russian natural gas suppliers can accept foreign currency payments from gas buyers of hostile countries if they collect gas supply debts from those buyers. The decree to this effect was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The document was published today on the legal information portal.
Payments can be made in a foreign currency, specified in the contract, using a special account opened by an authorized bank on the basis of a request from the Russian supplier. The gas delivery obligations are deemed fulfilled once the foreign buyer’s funds have been transferred to that account.
At the same time, “repayment of the foreign buyer’s debt under the natural gas supply agreement is not a reason for the Russian supplier to resume natural gas supplies if the foreign buyer fails to comply with the procedure established by this decree”, the document also reads.
