What you should know
- It will be a Friday on the verge of spring, with highs exceeding 50 degrees, temperatures closer to the late March averages than expected in late December.
- The clouds move in on Friday afternoon and the rain is expected to start on Saturday afternoon. Saturday night will be damp and balmy, but the more steady rain may drift away before the time the ball lands in Times Square.
- Sunday’s forecast looks glorious for the New York Giants, with temperatures in the 50s and partly sunny skies expected to kick off.
NEW YORK — Some years it’s cold on New Year’s Eve, but this time it will be different.
S freezing temperatures gripping the tri-state area before the Christmas weekend they moved in and a stretch of mild weather will continue for the foreseeable future, bringing in temperatures approaching the 60s to kick off the new year.
The modest warming trend continues on Friday, with highs expected to reach the 50s for many in the New York area. Those highs are close to the average temperatures one would expect in late March rather than late December. However, after a great last day of the work week, the situation becomes, shall we say, less than ideal. But there is some good news.
While the night should be humid and mild, Times Square could be dry by midnight with steady rain sweeping through the area throughout the afternoon and possibly drifting east by then. Cross your fingers.
However, the weather isn’t something you need to worry about for Sunday’s Giants game. We are once again seeing temperatures in the mid 50’s to start with partly sunny skies. Everything that Big blue have to do is win and they are in the playoffs. They get the wobbly Indianapolis Colt, and even if they lose, they have a good chance of moving forward.
Weather-wise, that balmy stretch continues into early next week, with partly cloudy forecasts for Monday and highs hovering in the 50s for now. It could be the last day without rain for a while.
The rest of the workweek looks volatile, with possible Tuesday-Thursday afternoon showers when the kids return to school. Temperatures are expected to hit 60 degrees by mid-week before starting to drop, reaching 40 degrees next weekend.
