New Chinese covid variant: immunology approves its vaccine

Marcos López, president of the Spanish Society of Immunology.

The irruption of cases from coronavirus in China and the fear that they could be spread Europe prompted Spain to activate the first measures face possible new variants. The Minister of Health, Caroline Dariareported that Chinese travelers would be asked to a negative Covid-19 test o the complete vaccination schedule of all vaccines approved by the World Health Organization, including that of Chinese origin.

This move was applauded by Marco Lopezpresident of Spanish Society of Immunologyand states in Medical writing that “the efficacy data of the Chinese vaccine are lower than those of the messenger RNA that have been applied in Spain, so it is likely that these people they are not equally immunized. Despite this, it is part of a approved vaccine by WHO, then should continue to ask a vaccination passport”.

While there is still not much information on what is happening in China, López believes that “the people they have not been over vaccinated and the hospitals are full because of the population he is not immunized against the virus. That’s why they have so many infections, a brutal quarantine policy, but people have not been vaccinated. Therefore, a vaccination passport is required to enter Spain and Europe.

“Brutal quarantine policy has been implemented in China, but people have not been vaccinated”

As regards the role to be played by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in this affair, the president states that “the EMA is responsible for approving vaccines in the European Union. On the other hand, at the regulatory level, other bodies have this competence, such as governments. EMA analyzes data on safety and efficacy, but asks which vaccine should be given it’s not your job”.

Coordinated action in Europe against covid

AND strict control of all borders of the European Union is the best measure that can be carried out according to the immunologist: “It is useless to check airports from Spain if in other countries it is not done. Controlling Europe’s entry is vital, although there is an important difference in relation to when the coronavirus first broke out. Now we are immunized and protected from serious diseases, the problem is whether they reach us infect”.

“With such a high incidence, a new variant could appear”

A coordinated action among European countries is one of the lessons that López defends that was learned with the outbreak of the coronavirus: “It must not be forgotten and it must be applied as quickly as possible. The problem that can arise is that, with a such a high incidence, one can appear new variant. A mutation would cause big problems again. To avoid this possibility, the entry of infected people into Spain must be prevented.
