Eiros facing coronavirus in China: “Western vaccines confer cross-protection against variants” – Province of Valladolid

The experience accumulated after two years of health crisis and vaccination coverage puts us in another perspective in front of the hatched of the coronavirus in the Asian giant China. Knowledge of the disease and population immunity are key to addressing this new scenario. The message of tranquility was launched today from the microphones of COPE José María Eiros, director of the national flu center of Valladolid and professor of Microbiology at UVAwhich ensures: “Western vaccines confer cross-protection against other variants.”

The experience in influenza vaccination and “more modest” in SARS-CoV-2 confirms that a person “faithful” to the vaccination and who has several doses of the vaccine, is able to induce a cross-response in their memory cell system to other variants. “It is very advantageous for humans that our system is able to respond to a variant close to the one that was circulating and against which he was vaccinated, precisely because of those memory cells”.

We must not lose sight of the fact that after the strict confinement in China and the consequent easing of the measures, there has been an increase in infections. This situation is reminiscent of the one experienced in Spain in the early stages of the pandemic. At that time the population did not have the possibility to be vaccinated against COVID because the laboratories worked tirelessly to prepare the appropriate serum. “The good part is that we know that the situation in Spain and in the West is different than it was three years ago. This situation is what China can experience at the time of the outbreak of the disease.”Comments.

With an increasing contagion scenario in China, there is fear of the virus mutating. “The coronavirus is well in the human species and its transmission is ongoing. The situation in China may allow him to acquire new mutations, but he still admits imitations that are harmful to him”reassures Dr. Eiros.

Finally, Dr Eiros explains that to the extent that information is generated from the dynamics of the virus, this knowledge is transferred to companies to adapt vaccines. “The world has the technology to do this, not just RNA vaccines, proteins, adjuvanted vaccines, viral vector…there are various viral strategies”he qualified
