ANNOUNCEMENTS•
In a crowdfunding campaign for three victims of a fatal road accident on Monday, 30,000 euros were raised in a short time. The money was raised to pay for the family’s funeral.
The accident occurred on Boxing Day morning at a crossroads south of Rotterdam. Two cars collided head-on. In one of the vehicles were a 35-year-old man, a 36-year-old woman and their 7-year-old daughter.
Emergency services showed up in large numbers and a trauma helicopter also arrived at the scene. First aid to the victims was useless.
No funeral insurance
The fundraising campaign was launched in the late morning by Karin Mulder, mother-in-law of the victims. She initiated the action with a friend after hearing that the three did not have funeral insurance.
The cost of a sober funeral has been estimated at 20,000 euros, and for a more luxurious variant at 30,000 euros. When the action started, it went very fast, Mulder saw. At the beginning of the evening the counter was already at 20,000 euros and before midnight the 30,000 euros had been reached, divided over about 1600 donations.
Mulder calls the many donations “overwhelming”. Today she went to pick up the parents of the male victim, who arrived from Curaçao, at the airport. Her mother was obviously very sad, Mulder says, but when she learned of the money she raised, “there was still a small smile.”
Even now that the target amount has been met, the campaign will continue to cover all other costs, Mulder says.
Driver under the influence
The accident happened around 6 am on the Groene Kruisweg near the A15 at the Charlois exit. The driver of the other car, a 28-year-old man from The Hague, was seriously injured. He was detained in the hospital.
A police spokesman confirmed yesterday that the driver was present at the time of the accident under the influence used to be. Yesterday it was still not clear what means she had used; the police could not say anything about it tonight.
There was also a fatal crash in Oss last weekend in which the rider was under the influence; alcohol was involved. A 14-year-old boy was killed.
The Dutch Institute for Alcohol Policy STAP called the police yesterday towards the end of the year additional check on the use of alcohol in traffic.
