Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Male citizens of Russia are now busy freezing sperm. This is at least the case for those who have been drafted, part of President Vladimir Putin’s partial mobilization movement for war in Ukraine.
Men have the right to keep their sperm. This is done for free in cryobank or seed bank.
“Since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military mobilization order was issued, many men across the country have started freezing or storing sperm since last October. The men immediately rushed to the reproductive clinic before heading to the area of war,” as reported by the British media Mirror, quoted on Wednesday (28)/2/2022).
“They reportedly still want to have children even if they died on the battlefield in the future,” the media added.
This fact was also reported by Reuters citing Russian media, TASS. The president of the Bar Union of Russia, Igor Trunov, said the Russian health ministry had responded to his request for financial assistance for the sperm freezing programme.
“The ministry is likely to provide financial support to the federal budget for free sperm preservation and storage for citizens mobilized to participate in military special operations for 2022-2024,” Trunov said.
“Families can also use the stored biomaterial free of charge if the statutory health insurance certifies that they can do so,” he added.
As is known, since last September Putin has summoned more than 300,000 of his male citizens to support Russia’s “special military operations” in Ukraine. The push is said to have prompted hundreds of thousands of Russian men to flee the country to avoid military service and sparked the largest anti-Kremlin protests since Russia sent troops to Ukraine in February.
Russia’s war has been described by Ukraine and its Western allies as unprovoked aggression. Currently, the war has entered its 11th month, during which tens of thousands of lives have been lost.
