Speed limits change on one of the busiest motorways in Spain. The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) and the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) developed a road accident plan in Mediterranean highway, which includes, in addition to various control measures, the reduction of speed in some sections.
So far this year, the AP-7 sum 23 dead, 17% of 135 people died on Catalan roads. There have also been 45 seriously injured since January.
The AP-7 registers more traffic and more problems from toll release, in August 2021. According to SCT data, mobility has grown by 40% since then, while congestion due to accidents increased by 98%.
“This coordinated intervention with the ministry allows us to act in the sections with more victims try to reduce this accident rate, and it will also reduce congestion and improve the quality of service of the AP-7”, justifies the director of the SCT, Ramon Lamiel.
Maximum speed on the AP-7: sections affected
Traffic managers in Catalonia will intervene four sections of the highway which add up to 82 kilometers.
- Girona, Salt-Fornells de la Selva (kilometers 47 to 66). In this four-lane section, the SCT will segregate the fourth exclusively for entry and exit, between Girona Sud and Girona Nord. The speed in that lane it will be limited to 80 km/h. “It is expected that this measure -says SCT in a statement- will lead to traffic management and a reduction of collisions” for autonomy.
- Valles, Mollet-Papiol section (km 132 to 161). Speed will be reduced for all vehicles to 100 km/h. The Catalan traffic service will step up the speed controls and install the “variable speed system”.
- Tarragona, Altafulla-Constantí section (km 238 to 247). The Servei Català de Trànsit will install a radar section in those nine kilometres, heading south. The aim is to stop the excess speed, which is very common on a straight and sloping stretch, and where rear-end collisions also occur frequently.
- Lands of the Ebro, Calafat-l’Ampolla section (km from 288 to 313). Speed will be reduced for all vehicles to 100 km/h. The “specific limitations” for the truck: 80 km/h limit and no overtaking.
“Since the very beginning we have had an excellent degree of cooperation with SCT. We are aware of it the AP-7 is a transcendental axis for the mobility of the territory, therefore it is necessary to act to improve the safety and the functionality of the road”, assures the general secretary of the Infrastructures of Mithma, Xavier Flores.
