“The meningitis C vaccine (conjugate) protects only one serotype of the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus), one of the main bacteria causing meningitis. While the vaccine ACWY (conjugated) protects against these 4 serotypes of the disease. The expansion of vaccination is due to cases of meningitis C in Minas Gerais and several neighboring states and the need to improve vaccination coverage. Furthermore, young people are primarily responsible for maintaining the circulation of the disease in the community, due to high rates of asymptomatic meningococcal carriage status in the nasopharynx,” said Paulo.
