Füchse Berlin go into the break for the World Cup as Bundesliga leaders

Frankfurt am Main (dpa) – The Berlin Foxes enter the World Cup break as leaders of the handball Bundesliga. The club from the capital came to 28:22 (14:9) against SC DHfK Leipzig and with 31:5 points overcame the record champions THW Kiel (30:6) to take first place.

The people of Kiel had already successfully completed the last test of the year – such as the third-placed Rhein-Neckar Löwen (29:7) and the fourth-placed champions SC Magdeburg (27:5) – on Monday. SG Flensburg-Handewitt (26:10) kept their mini-chance in the title fight with a 34:24 (16:11) against HSG Wetzlar.

Right-wing Hans Lindberg was a man of fame for the Berliners, who at the end of the year led the Bundesliga table for the first time in the club’s history. The 41-year-old Dane scored ten times and with a total of 2877 goals is now the second highest goalscorer in Bundesliga history behind South Korea’s Kyung-Shin Yoon (2905). Lindberg surpassed his compatriot Lars Christiansen (2875) in the standings.

In Flensburg, the extension of goalkeeper Benjamin Buric’s contract until 2028 caused applause from the 6,000 fans even before kick-off. “It was our absolute desire to extend with Benko,” said SG coach Maik Machulla. In the game itself, his team was hardly challenged by the Hessians. Emil Jakobsen with eight goals and national team captain Johannes Golla (6) were the best throwers in the undisputed victory.
