NFL coach suspended for one year for gambling

Miles Austin, a wide receiver coach for the New York Jets in the NFL, was suspended for one year by the league for gambling. League employees are prohibited from placing sports bets.

The New York Jets will have to do without wide receiver coach Miles Austin in the NFL for the time being after he received a one-year suspension for gambling. He was already absent last Thursday when his team had to compete against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to the American ProFootballTalk, Austin would have placed several bets on basketball games in the NBA. Earlier, the NFL coach’s attorney told the AP that Austin hadn’t bet on NFL games. He appeals against the suspension:

“The NFL has suspended Miles Austin for betting from a legal account on non-NFL professional sports and table games,

“Miles did not bet on an NFL game in violation of NFL employee betting policies. He cooperated fully with the NFL investigation. He will appeal the suspension.”

The NFL’s gambling policy prohibits club employees from betting on sports. This is not just sports betting within the NFL, but a total betting ban. In addition, the 38-year-old coach would also have placed his bets from the Jets clubhouse, which is also banned by the NFL.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy broke the news of the suspension last week, but the league declined to comment further. Austin was in his second season as wide receiver coach with the New York Jets. Before that, he worked for the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL star suspended for gambling

Earlier this year, American football star Calvin Ridley was suspended for betting on NFL games, including those of his then-team the Atlanta Falcons. This suspension also had a minimum duration of one year. Effective February 15, 2023, the NFL will review the case and decide whether to extend or lift the wide receiver’s suspension. Calvin Ridley is now signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
