The death of the last freshwater dolphin is believed to have occurred as a result of illegal fishing.

According to WWF, the body of a healthy dolphin was found floating in the Mekong River, east of Cambodia’s Kratie province.

The Irrawaddy dolphin, estimated to be between seven and ten years old, 196 centimeters long and weighing 93 kilograms, was found wrapped in fishing line.

The dolphin species is also found in two other freshwater rivers in Myanmar and Indonesia.
