Melbourne: Australia got off to a good start in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa’s first-innings score of 189. The Australians scored 45 for the loss of a wicket during the first day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Usman Khawaja (1) is back. David Warner (32) and Marnus Labuschagne (5) are at the crease. Kagiso Rabada gets the wicket. Earlier, South Africa lost the toss and were all out for 189. Cameron Green took five wickets to destroy the visitors. Only Marco Jansen (59) and Kyle Vereyne (52) shone in the South African lineup.
South Africa got off to a poor start as indicated by the score. With only 67 runs on the board, they lost five wickets. Dean Elgar (26), Sarel Irvine (18), Tunis De Bruyne (12), Themba Bavuma (1) and Khaya Zondo (5) are all disappointed. So Vereyne-Jansen banded together to save South Africa from collapse. Both added 112 runs. But Green gave the visitors the breakthrough when Verein was sent off. Green sent Jansen back close behind.
Maharaj (2), Kagiso Rabada (4) and Lungi Ngidi (2) made quick comebacks to keep South Africa’s score under 200. Antich Norje (1) remained unbeaten. Besides Green, Mitchell Starc took two wickets. Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland have one wicket each. This is the second Test in the three match series. Australia won the first test. The Aussies can clinch the series if they win in Melbourne.
