Dozens poisoned by ammonia leak in Serbian town of Pirot | Abroad

At least 51 people in the Serbian town of Pirot have been poisoned by an ammonia leak. Seven of them were taken to hospital. The leak occurred after a freight train carrying ammonia gas derailed.

A state of emergency was declared in Pirot. Residents of the affected part of the city are to stay indoors and schools will be closed on Monday.

Due to the concentrated ammonia cloud, visibility on a nearby highway was poor, causing several cars to collide. The road to Bulgaria is closed. It was very busy due to the Christmas holidays.

According to the mayor of Pirot, the train was carrying 20 wagons of ammonia. Gas leaked from two of them. It is still unclear what caused the train to derail.
