A freight train carrying ammonia derailed in Pirot, eastern Serbia. As a result, a high concentration of gas was released and dozens of people were hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning.
The mayor of the city has declared a state of emergency and residents must stay indoors for now. He said there was ammonia in twenty cars and that ammonia had leaked from two cars.
The gas leak reduced visibility on a nearby highway, causing several cars to collide. Due to the Christmas holidays it was busy on a road leading to Bulgaria. The police closed the road.
Due to the state of emergency, Pirot’s schools will not be open tomorrow. It is not yet clear what caused the derailment.
