Traditionally, shortly before the start of the World Championships, the representative selection of Slovak hockey players under 20 enjoyed a sumptuous dinner right at the championship venue. After moving from training in Truro to Moncton, the players have at least for a while forgotten about the pre-season stress.
Christmas dinner consisted of traditional Slovak dishes. The cabbage, fish and potato salad were fragrant on the table. Young Slovaks also indulged in wafers and sweets, prepared for them by our indigenous people who lived behind the “big puddle”.
“The food wasn’t quite like what we’re used to at home, but I agree with my companions that it was better than last year. The chefs have made a bigger effort this time.” said Maxim Štrbák with a smile to Slovakia hockey.
His father and former NHL player Martin Štrbák is also part of the implementation team. “It’s a small plus. We’re all away from our families right now, so his presence helps me.” added the Slovakian defender.
The program was spiced up by striker Peter Repčík, who demonstrated his acting skills. He received a standing ovation from his teammates and coaches.
“Coach Štrbák has known me since childhood and asked me if I had anything in my repertoire. I remembered some poems, this one suited the situation, so I tried it. I chose the work Výstrel z motyky by Jozef Urban, with whom I previously took second place in the regional stage of the Hviezdoslavov Kubín competition,” recalled Repčík, who was partnered by the overseas team’s driver Jim. He has prepared gifts for the players.
Under the tree the youngsters found a biography of national team coach Craig Ramsay, a winter cap and a bag of vitamins.
The Slovaks will open their participation in the tournament on December 27 at 17:00 CET against Finland. The day after, they will play against the United States at 22:00 CET. After a rest day, Ivan Fenes’ side will take on Latvia at 17.00 CET and on the final day of this year they will face the Swiss at 17.00 CET.
