The Norwegian Meteorological Institute predicts messy Christmas weather in several places

The dream of a clean room Christmas is about to crumble, at least for some parts of the country.

The big weather change in southern Norway has already started and the danger warnings from meteorologists are in queue.

In western Norway, the combination of wind and rain has already heralded its arrival, as well as the increase in temperature.

An ice warning was issued for both Rogaland, Vestland and Sunnmøre, due to rain hitting the cold ground:

– Locally, rain can freeze to the ground when it hits and driving conditions will be difficult. It will likely be worse in inland areas where it has been colder and it will take longer for it to become mild, says state meteorologist Magnus Haukeland of the Dagbladet Meteorological Institute.

He is responsible for the Vestlandet and Trøndelag areas.

Run away cheaper

The wind also blows well in several places, with severe to strong south-southeasterly gales on the coast south of Stad. For example, Bergen police had previously reported a trailer that had been swept away 10 to 15 meters away.

North of Sunnmøre, people escape relatively cheaply, according to Haukeland. It is still cold in several locations in Trøndelag in the early afternoon on Sunday, but temperatures will gradually rise throughout the day.

If you live in Vestland County and have fancied a trip to the mountains this Christmas, you should shelve your plans, according to the meteorologist. A danger warning for slush and avalanches was issued here.

– Locally there could be up to 60mm of rain, while the snowline rises to 800m. Then there can be some slush avalanches, Haukeland says.

– He can giggle

He adds that there is a significant risk of avalanches in the mountainous areas of Jotunheimen, Hardanger and Voss, and that precipitation and wind are expected in the mountains.

– A messy space Christmas awaits us. Low pressure will dominate the weather picture for western and central Norway. Areas north of Stad periodically slip away from the cheapest, but there could be some precipitation like snow in these areas on Tuesday, Haukeland says.

Nor were danger warnings delayed in Southern Norway and Eastern Norway.

As cold air lingers, warm air will drift straight in, explains state meteorologist Rafael Escobar.

– Then it can get muggy and rain even if there are temperatures below zero and ice on the ground. It will happen mainly in areas south of Minnesund, he says.

Warn drivers

It can create challenging driving conditions, warns Escobar:

– If you go out today, you need to consider how important that car trip is, because it will be difficult to drive. Rain freezing on the ground is nothing special. It will be a difficult transition period.

Especially in Oslo and in the southern areas it rains.

– It will be wonderful, and there will probably also be positive graduations in the Oslo area.

On the other hand, if you live in Eastern Norway north of Minnesund, you can be prepared for large amounts of snow.

When Dagbladet speaks to the weatherman at 12.30, he plans to send out a snow warning. In some places, such as Lillehammer and Hamar, there can be up to 15 to 20 centimeters of snow, according to Escobar.

– A snowstorm may occur

Northern Norway has been painted white by large amounts of snow over the past few days.

A polar low pressure created a storm on the Troms coast in the morning and morning hours, but it is about to weaken by 1pm on Sunday, meteorologist Anita Ager-Wick told Dagbladet.

– It will still last a couple of hours, but when it passes things will be calmer. At the same time, a low pressure is coming from Southern Norway which will create a lot of offshore wind in Nordland, and as there has been a lot of snow on the ground, a snow front may form which will cause difficult driving conditions locally.

The warning about snow flurries, i.e. snow that is blown up by the wind and causes poor visibility, will apply in Nordland on Sunday afternoon, evening and night.
