This is almost double the 2028 edition. Around €615 million was wagered online during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, an amount higher than expected, AFP told the National Gaming Authority (ANJ) on Saturday. The France-Argentina final alone generated 55 million bets, compared to 37.5 million for France-Croatia in 2018, the ANJ said, confirming data published in Les Echos, which added that 30 million were wagered during the semifinal France-Morocco. By comparison, a total of 366m had been wagered on the competition in 2018 and 420m on the Euro in 2021, according to the industry policeman, who is due to publish a more comprehensive assessment of the figures and bettor behavior in January.
The ANJ had initially anticipated at least €530m of internet betting in France during the World Cup, a 70% increase since the 2018 World Cup. But the amount could vary depending on the French team’s progress in the competition . This report will also include a section dedicated to the operators’ advertising campaigns (contents, volumes and levers used).

“Questionable Marketing Techniques”
On Monday, the Addictions France association denounced the “questionable marketing techniques” of sports and alcohol betting companies, “the other winners” of the Mondial-2022 according to it. “Pervasive in public places and on the Internet,” operators of online betting sites and alcoholics “encourage unhealthy practices by clearly associating football with alcohol consumption and gambling,” the association wrote in a statement. Prior to the World Cup, gambling and media companies were committed to more “responsible” advertising, particularly by limiting advertising pressure to minors.
