Wout Weghorst has reacted to friction with Lionel Messi. “I wanted to pay tribute to him after the match, but he wasn’t ready,” the Dutchman said on Thursday. “I take it as a nice compliment that he now knows my name. It means I did something right.”
Recall that the quarter-finals between the Netherlands and Argentina were a heated game, with players on and off the pitch who clashed in many situations. Messi was not exactly on good terms with Weghorst after the match and answered him from afar in the mixed zone: “What are you looking at, stupid?”
For Weghorst, the whole thing doesn’t seem to matter anymore. The Besiktas striker prefers to enjoy the big fight between the two teams: “I fought against Messi and there were some moments between us. I think we surprised them. But I have a lot of respect for him. He’s the best, or one of the best players in history”.
In the end Weghorst was behind with the Netherlands, losing 5:6 on penalties. While the World Cup ended in the quarter-finals for Elftal, Argentina made it to the final, where they finally beat reigning world champions France again on penalties. Messi thus crowned his incredible career with the world title.
