A small plane crashed on the Californian beach of Santa Monica, where every year many tourists gather to admire the end of the famous Route 66 at the gates of Los Angeles.
The US authorities have opened an investigation.
Images of the incident, which occurred late Thursday afternoon, quickly circulated on social media.
Video of the crash shows the plane flying perilously low near the famous pier overlooking the beach and its amusement park, before crashing a few dozen meters away and plunging violently onto the sand, watched by astonished passers-by.

Former Santa Monica Mayor Rex Minter has died in an accident, authorities said. The 90-year-old was the only passenger aboard the tiny Cessna 150.
