“I am very happy to work here. I feel safe during rehearsals, it’s a good feeling. I have a very good ensemble – it’s nice to work with actors who are interested in the process and the work, who love people,” says Matīs Budovskis.
During the song festival, thousands of people can join in singing and dancing that touch the hearts of thousands more. In this story, only nine of our kind come together, and yet – opinions about what and why happens at the Song and Dance Festival can lead to laughter or tears and hopefully nothing more tragic. And although this show will be about the Song Festival – the question is ultimately about ourselves – how to keep your voice after singing a lot and how to agree in these confusing times not only in singing, but also in conversation. Do we really always need a special reason to have a real conversation?
“Song Festival is the high point of Latvian folk culture and in this show it is important for me to understand and redefine why this festival is important to us. There is a feeling that in times of peace we start to take over our country, people, holidays and freedoms for granted, but the example of our neighbors shows us that it is a constant battle, which must be waged not only externally, but also internally. In the last three years – during the pandemic – especially in the internet environment, I experienced extreme hatred, aggression and categorical thinking.
I am very afraid of the moment when we become categorical even in relations with each other. In this show we will all be “locked” in a room, we will have to communicate with each other and achieve a result. The ability to speak will be relevant both before and after the holidays. I wanted to make a show where opinions collide and where things are said face to face. We don’t have to be afraid that someone will question our beliefs. If he’s real and honest, when he answers doubts, he can’t help but stay stronger,” adds the director.
Actors – Anda Albuže, Kaspars Gods, Rolands Beķeris, Sandis Pīcis, Agnese Jēkabsone, Everita Pjata-Gertner, Kaspars Kārklinņš, Anete Berķe, Gatis Maliks take part in the show. Together with the director, the show is created by a team of young artists: set and costume designer Paulīne Kalniņa and lighting designer Niks Tsipruss.
“Niks is a lighting technician whom I met already during my studies. He lit my first show during my studies, which received the main award of the Latvian Academy of Culture theater festival “Patriarha Rudens” as the best work of Niks is a professional in her field who has worked in several theaters in Latvia, Pauline is an artist with a solid backbone. theaters in Latvia. I have a lot of faith in the taste and work skills of my creative team”, the director describes his team.
The play will be screened in the small hall of the Liepaja theater in the concert hall “Lielais dzintars”, its premiere is scheduled for January 13th. It can also be seen on January 14 and 29 and February 11.
