Aboul Gheit offers to help the Lebanese in “dialogue”

Lebanese security is pursuing suspects in the killing of the Irish soldier

The Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, affirmed that “achieving an economic breakthrough in Lebanon depends on breaking the political impasse”, declaring that “the Arab League is fully willing to do what is asked of it” in the dossier of activate the dialogue.

Aboul Gheit was attending an economic symposium in Beirut, which was also attended by Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who warned in a speech at the symposium that Lebanon was at “a crossroads, either expected rise or grim deterioration” .

For his part, Aboul Gheit indicated that “the reforms needed to get Lebanon out of the crisis are no longer hidden from anyone, and reform is no longer an option, but rather an urgent necessity that does not accept delays”, especially at the light of the worsening food and energy crises, underlining that “these crises have made the situation in Lebanon more difficult, and it is also a strong incentive to speed up reforms. He announced that the Arab League is fully willing to do what is required of it to facilitate channels of dialogue among the Lebanese. “Blocking of dialogue and the ease of barricading oneself behind positions to pass the time is not a viable strategy for dealing with the existing blockade.”

On the other hand, Lebanese Army intelligence arrested a group of people to get their testimonies and identify suspects in the attack on International Forces South Lebanon (UNIFIL), which resulted in the death of an Irish soldier . Security sources told Asharq Al-Awsat the arrests did not prove their direct involvement in the attack, “as the investigation is still in its infancy.”
