NEW YORK – Extensive flooding swept parts of Long Island, New York City and the New Jersey coast early Friday, with high winds on land combining with high tide to strand cars in what seemed be several meters of water.
Nassau County’s Freeport, Baldwin Bay and Hempstead Bay experienced extensive coastal flooding, with water levels recorded at 7.2 feet as of 8 a.m. Friday. However, the threat should continue to decrease as the day progresses.
The winds will shift to the west on Friday afternoon which will significantly lower hidden tide levels. Water levels are projected to remain well below a minor flood stage (6 feet) in the future. Check the high tide times here.
The remaining coastal flood warnings in place are expected to expire by mid-afternoon. Check weather alerts here.
Howard Beach in Queens was also hit hard early Friday morning. The city’s Department of Environmental Protection said it was prioritizing that neighborhood and other vulnerable neighborhoods in the southern part of the district. He said he hoped to ramp up cleanup efforts once the high tide waters receded. Check weather alerts in your neighborhood here.
