The state will provide $43 million for three new consortia focused on integrated photonics, metamaterials, and soldier fly rearing.
Looking to 2023, the Israel Innovation Authority has allocated 150 million shekels to establish new consortia to support the development of technologies in three areas. These are integrated photonics, metamaterials and metasurfaces, and black soldier fly culture..
“The funding provided to these three consortia is part of the authority’s strategy to encourage high-risk endeavors within Israel’s technology industry. While developing new core capabilities that will enable breakthrough new markets with disruptive technologies, both for start-ups and large enterprises.”said Aviv Zeevi, vice president of technology infrastructure at the Israel Innovation Authority.
According to MarketAndMarket data, in 2021, Silicon Photonics Market Hits $1.1 Billion Driven by High Demand for Silicon Photonics Components. The market value of silicon photonics is expected to rise to $4.6 billion by 2027.
“The passage of the electromagnetic wave through a metamaterial medium modifies the wavefront in a calculated way and allows highly efficient re-engineering of energy fields and flow, to produce unconventional mirrors, thin lenses, tunable antennas, wide-angle absorbers, and more still,” commented the IIA.
‘The Metamaterials and Metasurfaces consortium seeks to promote these technologies within Israeli academia and industry, to make possible the design and integration of such components into various systems (such as communications and optics).’
“Today, Black Soldier Fly products have only approved it for use in livestock feed. But it is almost certain that in the future its use will extend to humans for the production of food, cosmetics and medicines”.closed the IAA in a statement.
