The planet is called Kepler-1658 b, 2,571 light-years away. Scientists say its gruesome fate could one day affect Earth as well. Of course that’s still a long time, billions of years away.
“The planet’s orbit is shrinking,” NASA reported. “Kepler-1658 b appears to rotate towards its parent star and is likely to crash into the star’s surface.”
This terrible event occurred because the star Kepler-1658 b is also nearing the end of its history. The star also swells and expands, and that expansion increases the gravitational interaction between the star and the planets that surround it.
Kepler-1658 b is getting brighter and hotter, so scientists are calling it a fried planet. This apocalyptic process will still take about 3 million years to reach its end, NASA says.
“Our home planet could also meet its demise when the Sun becomes large enough to engulf the Earth billions of years from now,” NASA said.
Yes, even the sun will finish its story and roast the Earth too. But don’t worry, this is estimated to only happen in about 5 billion years to come.
Kepler-1658 b was discovered in 2009, which is the first year NASA has begun examining alien worlds outside our Solar System, known as exoplanets. There were doubts that Kepler-1658 b would not be granted official planet status until 2019.
