Wout Weghorst talks controversy with Messi

After winning the quarter-final against the Netherlands, Lionel Messi was very angry with Oranje striker Wout Weghorst and hissed at him during a television interview. The scene went viral. Weghorst now comments on events with some distance.

The 30-year-old gave the Netherlands a comeback in the World Cup quarter-finals thanks to his two wildcard goals and secured extra time and subsequent penalties, which Argentina won.

He is said to have taunted his Argentine opponents and Messi during his mission, which led to the armored reaction of the gaucho captain. Weghorst told the Telegraaf: “I wanted to pay tribute to Messi after the match but he wasn’t ready to do it. I guess it’s a compliment that he knows my name. It means I did something right.”

The PSG forward turned to Weghorst during an interview and said: “What are you looking at, idiot?” He felt disrespected by the Dutch.

Nothing attacks for Weghorst: «I fought against Messi and there were moments between us. I think we surprised them. But I have great respect for him. He is the best or one of the best players in history.”
