umaneuver that could have turned into a tragedy. A RATP bus driver on line 125 in Paris drove in the opposite direction on the Porte de Gentilly ring road on Wednesday, December 21, according to information from the Parisian. The bus, full of passengers, which circulates between the Maisons-Alfort Veterinary School and the Porte d’Orléans, was filmed by a motorist making a U-turn in the middle of traffic.

The author of the video expressed his amazement: “He took the ring road in the opposite direction! With the world in there… They’re almost all dead. Faced with the driver’s manoeuvre, the vehicles stopped momentarily to allow the bus to resume the correct direction of travel. There were no injuries.

The driver fired

“This maneuver is totally prohibited and unforgivable,” reacted the RATP, which confirmed the incident to the newspaper. “The driver was quickly identified and fired. He will be received by his direction in the next few days as part of a disciplinary interview ”, added the Ile-de-France transport group chaired by the former prime minister, Jean Castex. A union contacted by the newspaper denounced the lack of training of the drivers. “This accident is the result of a cruel lack of training that was reduced to the bare minimum to meet the company’s unrealistic productivity goals,” complained Grégory Thomas, of the Sud transport federation.

This incident comes as the crisis simmers among Parisian bus drivers: absenteeism, recruitment difficulties and the multiplication of localized social conflicts highlight the malaise of the drivers. The goal for the RATP is to prepare for the opening of the competition, scheduled for 1and January 2025 on the surface network. This perspective and the accompanying uncertainties confuse machinists whose working conditions are gradually being changed to increase their productivity in the face of competition.
