After eighteen months, interviews of more than a thousand witnesses, and the study of over a million pages of documents, there is a final report on the storming of the Capitol. Trump is the “greatest cause” is the conclusion.
A 154-page abstract was published earlier this week. The US parliamentary committee was investigating the events of January 6, 2021.
The 845-page final report was released on Thursday. The commission recommended that former President Trump be prosecuted for storming the Capitol.
Even on this the final report is clear: all the evidence points in one direction and that is “that the main cause of January 6 is a man, former President Trump”, writes The New York Times.
After losing the election, Trump allegedly incited his supporters to riot. It wasn’t until three hours after protesters stormed the Capitol that he asked them to go home. According to the report, “none of these acts would have happened if Trump hadn’t instigated them.”
Prominent Democratic politician Nancy Pelosi provided the foreword to the final report. “Our democratic institutions are only as strong as the commitment of those entrusted with their care,” she writes.
The next eight chapters are according to the British newspaper The Guardian “one of the fiercest official portraits of a president in American history”.
Trump objected to the commission during the investigation. He speaks of a “witch hunt” aimed at preventing him from becoming president again.
