Education Minister Dijkgraaf calls on universities and universities of applied sciences to stop actively recruiting foreign students for the time being. Answer the call a wish of the House of Representatives.
In a letter to educational institutions, the minister states that there are positive aspects to international student traffic. But the negative effects, such as teachers’ workload and housing problems, are too great, he says.
‘Moreover, in the long run, it could put pressure on the sustainability, accessibility and quality of the Dutch higher education system,’ writes Dijkgraaf.
Dijkgraaf speaks of a “joint task” for school boards and the government, and wants a “total stop” until new arrangements on admissions and scholarships are made next year.
Exceptions to strict conditions are possible for social sectors with shortages in the labor market. This concerns, for example, healthcare, science and education.
