NASA’s Mars rover burns out, 4-year space exploration mission comes to an end |
China News Service, December 22 (Xinhua) According to US media reports, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on the 21st that due to the accumulation of a large amount of dust on the solar panels, the battery power of the Mars rover “InSight” (InSight) was exhausted and its 4-year space exploration missions come to an end.
InSight, which landed on Mars in 2018, was the first spacecraft to record Martian earthquakes. It used French-made seismometers to detect more than 1,300 Martian earthquakes, many of which were caused by meteoroid strikes.
The most recent Martian earthquake detected by InSight occurred earlier this year, shaking the ground for at least six hours, NASA said.
It is reported that the last communication sent by “Insight” dates back to 15 December.
On the 19th local time, the operations team imitated the “Insight” tone and wrote on Twitter: “My battery is really low, so this may be the last picture I can send. However, don’t worry about me: my Time here has been productive and peaceful. If I could continue to communicate with my mission team, I would, but I’ll be here soon. Thanks for sticking with me.”
