Cristiano Ronaldo has remained silent to his 780 million social media followers after Lionel Messi guided Argentina to the world title.
The 35-year-old scored twice before netting on penalties in Sunday’s final against France, which finished 3-3.
Fans and football legends were quick to praise Messi and Argentina, with triple world champion Pele praising the Paris Saint-Germain striker alongside fellow Brazilian Neymar.
Boxing star Canelo Alvarez also congratulated Argentina on their triumph despite a feud with Messi earlier in the tournament.
Piers Morgan was also forced to eat a humble pie after predicting a France victory with Messi breaking down in tears by the end of the match.
But instead of tears of sadness, there were tears of joy as Messi led Argentina to its first World Cup since 1986.
One man who has not publicly congratulated Messi is his longtime rival Ronaldo, who has yet to comment on Argentina’s success.
Ronaldo has over 780 million followers on his Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.
However, none of his social media channels have seen him post about the Barcelona legend.
Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro, meanwhile, did not take part in the tournament but did not hold back from her criticisms of the tournament.
He posted on Instagram: “Worst World Cup ever…which fortunately gave us a great final. What a match. Congratulations to Argentina.”
Messi not only won the World Cup, but also won the Ballon d’Or as the best player of Qatar.
He is the first player to have received this honor twice, having also been crowned World Cup Player in 2014.
Ahead of Portugal’s quarter-final elimination by Morocco, Ronaldo has stressed that his legacy, or anyone else’s, will not be affected by whether he wins the World Cup or not.
He explained: “Even if I win the World Cup, this will continue. Some people like me more, some less.
“It’s like life, some like blondes, some like brunettes.
“I had to show what I can do year after year. I would like to win this tournament.
“I’m ambitious but if you tell me I won’t win any more tournaments I’d still be happy despite what I’ve won.
“All other records will be in the history books. But obviously a World Cup on the shelf wouldn’t be bad. Would be a dream”.
